Fabric for the Designed Interior logo

Mill Tour

warp and creelThe Mill Tour Video provides insights into the complexity of producing fabric for residential and contract interiors while calling attention to the human talent and technology necessary to achieve a quality product. Both ends of the scale are examined--high technology and high technique.

The Video details how yarn in a vertical mill moves on its journey toward becoming a woven fabric starting with the dyeing process. Fabric screen printing is also highlighted as well as the labor-intense process of creating high-quality passementerie mostly from silk yarns dyed in the mill. An example of finishing fabric is included showing a working calender machine.

Company owners, designers, and mill artisans appear on camera to share their expertise. Although the Mill Tour was filmed in preparation of the First Edition of the book, the processes still remain correct and relevant.
